Meet Julie

An Independent Museum Professional & Consultant

Julie Bly DeVere (she/her) has managed the collections of several Bay Area museums, historic homes, and sites, over the last twenty years; as well as working abroad in Egypt on digs. Between 2011 and 2022 she was the Director of Museum Collections & Curator for the historic Filoli Estate, a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in Woodside, California. During her time at Filoli she was a key member of team that prepared for and achieved their American Alliance of Museum Accreditation. Since 2022 Julie has been an approved Peer Reviewer, with an emphasis in Collections Stewardship, for the American Alliance of Museums Museum Assessment Program (MAP).     

 

Since 2018, Julie has been a Faculty Lecturer in the Museum Studies Program at San Francisco State University; where she teaches Collections Management and Registration, Cultural Heritage Preservation, Project Management, and Introduction to Exhibit Design, as well as working with graduate students with collections focused thesis projects.

 

She holds a Bachelor of Art in Art History from Sonoma State University, and a Master of Art in Museum Studies from San Francisco State University. As well as a Certificate of Archives.

Community Connections

Julie believes in the power of volunteering to help support and build community. She has volunteered with a number of organizations over the years. 

 

She has served on the Bay Area Art Conservation Guild (BAACG) board since 2014. Serving as Secretary for a number of years, and is currently a Member-at-Large.

 

She is a past co-chair of the American Alliance of Museums Historic House & Site Network Committee (AAM-HHS) helping represent the needs of historic houses and sites around the country. And she is a current member of the AASLH's Historic House Museum Committee.

Julie is a long-term member of the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the California Association of Museums, and the American Association of State and Local History (AASLH).

​

A San Francisco Bay Area native Julie currently resides in Mountain View. When not working with collections you are likely to find her in yoga class, puttering in her vegetable garden, or planning her next travel adventure.
